20 / 21 September 2025 : The Weekend’s Action

0 22

So far so good.  But, as we all know, there is a long way to go and by looking at the other results we are in a very competitive league, as forecast.

Last week’s game never really got going but, as Middlesbrough tired, we took full advantage in the last fifteen minutes to take the five points.

  • 1st XV : for today’s game Robbie Rix and Harry Grant are unavailable so George Bastow plays at thirteen, Tom Pick returns to play in the second row with Matthew Bowman starting at eight.  Sam Robson, Oli Borman and Jack Sowersby make up the bench.
  • 2nd XV : travel to Sheffield Tigers in a league game. The team is starting to look stronger as players return from work commitments. Skipper Mark Blenkinsop will be hoping to get that first win on the board.
  • 3rd XV : start their league campaign next week at home against Moortown.  The lads are now playing in Yorkshire Championship east.  Apart from next week’s opponents, new teams to play include Selby and Pontefract plus local teams Scarborough and Malton. They will also play York 2nds !!
  • Women’s 1st XV : travel to Sefton on Sunday
  • Women’s 2nd XV : travel to Pocklington on Sunday
  • Colts : got off to a winning start last week.  It is always difficult to integrate two age groups at that level so I’m sure both sets of coaches will be pleased with the lads’ performance.

We welcome players and supporters from Penrith to Kelleythorpe for the first time in a long time. They are one of the teams who were moved across from the North West, and will have a lot of travelling. They, like ourselves, have won their first two games – notably against Harrogate last Saturday.  Something will have to give today.  I hope it’s in our favour.

Founders Bar

Passers-by will have seen a lot of activity next to the club house, creating the new outside bar over the past few weeks.

The works included laying stone to the entire area to allow the tent and container to be set up, a full transformation from a shipping container to a new fully-operational and stand-alone bar, erecting the tent (without any instructions!)
installing new fencing, laying woodchip for the flooring, connecting to water and electric mains and finally fabricating furniture to allow the bar to open this weekend.

W came to the conclusion that, due to the existing layout of the clubhouse and the success of our pre-match sponsorship lunches, we were missing the opportunity for people to come to the ground early to enjoy a drink in a relaxing environment.  In addition, it is also hoped the new bar will help after the game in the 60-90 minute rush where the main bar is extremely busy, and it can take a little while to get a drink.

As well as helping on match days, we are hoping to be able to open the bar in the evenings throughout spring and summer, where we plan to have food vendors along with live music.

We have named the new facility the Founders Bar, in recognition of our up-and-coming centenary year, and the founding members of Driffield RUFC.  This is something we are all very excited about, and we would welcome your
feedback over the next month or so once you have experienced it.
