In Memoriam – Dai Llewellyn

0 20

Pontypridd RFC are saddened to learn of the passing of former player Dai Llewellyn. We wish to pay our respects to Dai through resident Club Historian and wordsmith Alun Granfield, who has paid tribute on behalf of us as a Club in his memory.

Everyone at Pontypridd RFC would like to pass on its sincerest condolences to Dai’s family and friends at this extremely sad time.

The first time that Dai Llewellyn appears in the club’s official records is on the 11th of March 1967, when he joined the first team as a schoolboy when it travelled to Rugby, playing his first game at outside-half. The following season he was a regular name on the team-sheet, playing 35 games, usually at 10 but also occasionally at centre or wing. By now he was training to be a teacher and was only able to play a handful of games for our club, before moving to London, where he joined London Welsh. He played a lot of rugby for the London Welshmen, often covering for John Dawes and JPR Williams.

A Rhydyfelin boy, Dai Llewellyn played for Pontypridd Youth before graduating to the senior team, and I was recently given an old photograph of what was clearly a Pontypridd youth seven-a-side team. The only player I recognised was a young Tommy David, but my good friend and former player John Lewis was able to tell me that he was one of the lads in the front row and that the boy next to him was none other than Dai Llewellyn. He was a very good rugby player and it is with much sadness and regret that we note his passing.
