A composed Chester side worked doggedly to secure the winning points against a very young Lucs team who grafted hard throughout, for little gain.
The game started brightly and Chester took the lead when Liam Reeve kicked from wide, following Lucs infringements around the loose after 9 minutes. And the home side, despite plenty of possession, struggled to gain any meaningful ground with Chester’s tackling impressive throughout. And with the home side also being found guilty of too many tackle infringements and handling errors, handing their opponents the ball back when in good scoring territory to enable them to clear their lines.
And it was from another infringement on 28 minutes that Chester increased their lead to 6 points, when Reeve knocked over his second penalty. The game was lacking spark from both sides and with no real chances developing, the restless home crowd were glad to hear the half time whistle blow.

Luctonians RFC 0 v 6 Chester RUFC
Chester came out for the second half with more vigour and played with a great deal of composure when they controlled the game for long periods and, in doing so, denying the home side the ball. Lucs, who were now playing with a strong wind at their backs, could not make any headway and it was no surprise when Chester, who were playing some excellent phase rugby at this point, scored, which their dominance deserved, on 55 minutes when Kyle Joseph threaded himself through a mass of bodies to touch down to give them an 11 point advantage.
This appeared to spur Luctonians into action and, lead by the excellent Aiden Cheshire, they kept Chester on the back foot and in their own half for most of the last half hour. However they just lacked the killer edge to break through, and it wasn’t until the last vestiges of normal time that Cheshire drove through tackles from 5 metres out, to touch down, with Owen Randell drop kicking the extras to gain the home side a losing bonus point as the final act of the match.
Chester will be pleased with the result, as they were depleted by a Covid scare on the morning of the game, where Lucs will rue giving away too many penalties when in good field possession to allow their opponents time to clear their lines.
