If you remove the scrum completely you have yet another modified variant of gridiron, rugby union is already closer to gridiron than its ever been.Stop start with extended periods of ball not in play, this leads to players that can be oversized 9even in the backs) because the amount of actual ball in game time means you can be bigger in all departments. This as we've seen with gridiron leads to ever more increased kinetic energy in impacts so you yet again have more problems regards injuries and concussions. Union also has blockers to the ball/ball carrier in the rucks and mauls.
Without the scrums it becomes increasingly more about athletic ability and less skill/innovative tactics, we should utilise the scrum more there is no need to remove scrums now or in the future from a H&S POV. we don't have clashes regards heads in the scrums anymore so that won't effect concussions.
Great food for thought. Nice to read a genuine well informed post......
Would you make any changes to reduce dangerous situations? head injuries aside I've always disliked the situation where when two tacklers have stopped the player in possession and prevented the offload...... a third or even fourth tackler still piles in - probably to slow the play the ball down as the four "tacklers" seem to have this plan of peeling off the tackled player one at a time, so the rest of the defenders can get set and take a breath?.
In particular I wince when the ball handlers legs are static and a fourth opponent hammers into them........
