We may have to have a shorter season, therefore contingencies should be considered rather than panicked enforced poor decisions.

Plan ahead? Absolutely.
Reduce the season? Not if you want to keep financially viable while people can't pay to watch.
For me, the best way for RFL to plan ahead is to spend time building a pay per view site where people can pay an 'entry fee' to watch the game.
