The Virtual Terrace • Future of the Game

I know that we're going off beam here but, it does puzzle me that, just because someone in N. America, had the resources to fund a RL side, just why they would be invited/accepted in to the structure, when the geographical distance between them and the rest of the competing clubs was so far apart.

I'm sure that someone will prove me wrong but, is there any other club sport that would do this - not just the physical distance but, different continent and with no foundations ie, in a country not currently playing that sport.
Exhibition games are one thing but, fortnightly games, in a country 3000 miles away, with no existing players - it always looked and still looks like a bizarre decision - the search for the silver bullet goes on.
Btw, Widnes, Bradford, London and Newcastle being in SL will have little or no effect on the profile of the game either and in the case of Widnes, London and Newcastle, putting any of these clubs in SL, in place of Toronto, would see aggregate crowds drop, rather than increase.

All the English clubs named have had financial issues and Toronto would appear to be able to offer the RFL an extension to the geographical footprint of the sport - without requiring central funding.

With regard to crowds - I suppose all that silverware won by Leeds didn't lead to full-houses or a waiting list for season tickets.St Helens didn't sell-out their World Club Championship game.Local derbies didn't attract the largest attendances of the season - it appears the appearance of Toronto gave some clubs their season highest.

With local derbies used as pre-season games, testimonials, maybe they ain't the drawing card of yesteryear.

The whole sport needs a rethink, ready for the new normal.

The other code seems to be in a worse financial state at the moment and projected into next autumn.I hope the wise people are focusing on things...
