I left Snapethorpe in 1963, Dunk. Remember Jack Ward well. He took us for rugby (PE), gardening and maths. A nasty piece of work. He was quite fond of throwing those hard board rubbers straight for the head, and, as you say, wielding the cane or slipper. Not a very nice bloke really. I used to see him and his lad at BV regularly. he's probably gone to that potato patch in the sky now. We also had a teacher called Derek Bate for rugby in the first year. RU and football were taboo. Just after I left Berwyn Jones, the Trinity and international Welsh RU winger, took over as games master.
Yes, I remember mr Bate, once threw a board rubber at me in class. Met him about 17 years after leaving school at a Horbury school function witn my kids, he recognised me even though I had a full beard by then, bought me a pint the same night. He was the a Head master at a Barnsley school, sadly he died suddenly a few years ago. You’ll remember our head H G Wilson, piggy Wilson to the kids, nasty piece of work, also handy with the cane.
