Is anyone genuinely suggesting that a meaningful number of people didn't go to the NZ game because of shirt unveiling? Anyone who even thinks of attending a shirt unveiling must be amongst the most one-eyed supporters in the game. Anyway, are we talking about thousands of people? A hundred? Ten?
The NFL is the same as international RU and to an extent the RLWC - if people feel something is an 'event' they'll turn up in droves regardless of the actual spectacle. If its about the sporting contest then you'll only get fans of the game itself. How many of those attending the NFL games are just there to experience the razzamattazz and spectacle of it all and probably know sweet FA about the teams or even the sport? I'd bet a big chunk. I know loads of people who went to the last RUWC here in OZ who had literally no interest in the sport generally but they went in their thousands to watch minnows get hammered. Meanwhile in RL we fuss about how poor smaller teams are and the quality of the matches/referees or whatever.
That's what any marketing around international RL has to work on - making the games something people really want to go to.
