GRC Head 2025 Race Report
Sun, Rain, Seals, and Podiums.
What a way to start off the season at GRC Head!
Held on home turf in lovely water conditions, GRC started off the head race season in style with a 4km on the Clyde, from the four km mark (200m above Dalmarnock road bridge) to the viewing platform on our home stretch of river.
With quite a few new members and some scratch composites, it was a truly promising scene for the year ahead, with podium positions all round for Clydesdale as we made the most of our home advantage. Full results can be found on the GRC page https://www.glasgowrowingclub.org/grc-head-race-results/.
Congratulations to everyone who raced and made this such a good event to start the season. Thank you very much to Glasgow Rowing Club for organising such a well-run and attended event, and to Ben Parsonage for al the excellent photos in this race report!
Next up is our own Clydesdale Scullers Head on 25th October, information is now up on our website, we hope to see you all there!
Junior Results:
Division 1
O J18 4x
Hamish and Finlay added two new members to their crew to start the season, with Grisha and George getting their first race in Clydesdale colours. Racing above their age category it was a solid second place.
W J18 2x
Anna and Jaime paired to compete in one of the most populated fields of the day. Despite rowing against very tough competition they came away with 3rd place!Hamish and Finlay added two new members to their crew to start the season, with Grisha and George getting their first race in Clydesdale colours. Racing above their age category it was a solid second place.
Division 2
O J14 2x
Going out on their own after their solid 4x performance in Division 1. George and Grisha went on to compete in their second ever race for Clydesdale. We are very proud to have them racing so soon after joining and they really demonstrated their resilience in the very rainy row up to the start.
W J18 4x
Anna and Jaime brought in Amy, and another of our new recruits, Tara, to assist them in the 4x. Again most of this crew was racing above their age category and had an excellent performance and shows great depth and potential within our junior squad.
Senior Results:
Division 1
O 4x
Leading off the event was, Thomas; in his first race with the seniors, Jack; who hasn’t touched a boat since HIR, Ryan “250” Finnigan, and Evgeni, who has jumped from competing in Novice last year to his first race of the season being Open. This scratch crew took the second fastest time of the day to secure 2nd place.
O 4x
Elle, Veronika, and Robyn from the Senior Women showed up to take the 5th fastest time of the day and 3rd place, not too far behind the Senior Men in the Open category. With assistance from our neighbour from SUBC, Ben Huckle, who steered a solid course.
O Mas 4x
Douglas, Les, Danny, and Ken had a great performance in the 4x and put up an adjusted time, merely 12s seconds behind our senior men. Sadly, there was no like-for-like competition, but time to be rivalled nevertheless!
W Mas 2x
In this pairing, Margaret steered the course in the bow seat, while Clair, who raced in Clydesdale colours for the first time, set the rhythm from stroke. They have spent the last few weeks rowing the double together and we’re excited to see how the rest of the season unfolds for this double.
Division 2
O 2x
Again, opting for the Open categories, Robyn from the Senior Women paired up with Jack to compete in a very strong field in the double. Coming away with 3rd place and an excellent time.
O 2x
Unfortunately, due to illness, Thomas and SPRC partner, Dominic, had to scratch. However, we are sure it would have been another podium.
W Mas 4x
Clair and Margaret added Becky and Steph (SPRC) to their crew for their crew for the second division. The crew raced as their first time together and as the only masters quad, and came away with a time of 16:57.
O Mas 4+
With Danny subbing in last minute, due to another illness, the O Mas 4x from Division 1 took to the water with half the sticks. Joined by Kit in the cox seat, this well-drilled four put up another solid adjusted time, which surpassed any other coxed four or quad on the day.
O R2 4+
Another scratch crew from the Senior men, with Ryan and Evgeni from the O4x in Division 1, being joined by Ali and Lewis (Tay RC), and expertly steered by cox, Kelsey. This boat, made up of 3 SUBC and 2 GUBC alumni gelled together surprisingly fast, considering all are used to having 2 oars each. Another crew with no like-for-like competition, however a fun way to kick off the season and tester for the season ahead.
W 4x
Lastly, and certainly not least, with Robyn “Bowing out” to sit in the double, Veronika and Elle sat in the quad with Hannah and Jen. Again unfortunately, not getting any like-for-like competition, the quad showed their class beating out all the W R2 quads and would put up a 3rd fastest women’s quad time of the day!
