Swing Study: Matt Fitzpatrick by Steve Priest

0 336

When fans watch Matt Fitzpatrick’s swing today, they’re seeing the product of years of refinement, adaptation, and smart adjustments that transformed him from a steady fader of the ball into one of the longest hitters on tour.

Before his 2022 U.S. Open victory, Fitzpatrick’s backswing was more upright, which often led to a steeper angle of attack. That motion produced a consistent fade but limited his ball speed, keeping it around 170 mph. Despite a naturally fast swing speed, his efficiency wasn’t maximizing distance.

The turning point came when he adjusted his takeaway. Instead of staying upright, he began working his hands and club slightly under the plane, creating a more connected and shallower position at the top of his backswing. His left arm now runs more parallel to his shoulders, and his trail arm sits lower, encouraging a more “one-plane” motion.

Another key shift in Fitzpatrick’s swing has been his use of the ground. By allowing his left heel to lift on the backswing, he generates more hip turn and greater overall coil. On the downswing, that heel plants firmly, helping him drive his hips through, shallow the club, and create more lag. The result? A more powerful, leveraged strike into the ball. Continue watching for the rest of V1 Coach Steve Priest’s analysis of his swing.
