Washington Repeats IRA National Championship

0 4

Washington’s heavyweight varsity repeated as IRA National Champions over Harvard and Dartmouth, with only 1.1 seconds separating the gold, silver, and bronze medalists in heavy tailwind conditions on the Cooper River racecourse in Camden, N.J.

Washington coach Michael Callahan said defending the national championship was even harder than winning it, “especially here, in these conditions.”

Harvard, who caught and led number-one ranked Cal in the Saturday semifinal before the Golden Bears caught a massive crab in rough waters, now head to Red Top to race Yale next weekend in America’s original intercollegiate athletic event.

Dartmouth, whose lightweights won silver in the race prior, and whose women competed earlier in the day at the NCAAs for the first time in 14 years, had the Big Green’s best day since winning the 1992 IRA National Championship (a tie with Navy and Penn).

The lightweight IRA National Championships were also successfully defended by Princeton’s women and Harvard’s men.
