2025 British Judo Awards – Celebrating Excellence Across the Tatami
British Judo is delighted to announce the winners of the 2025 Annual Awards — a celebration of the exceptional individuals, clubs, and contributions that make our community so special.
This year’s awards mark a new chapter in how we recognise success across the sport. Rather than hosting a traditional awards dinner, we’ve focused our efforts on directly supporting and celebrating our members and clubs throughout the UK — giving back to those who make judo such a thriving and inclusive community.
From inspirational coaches and dedicated volunteers to outstanding clubs and advocates of inclusion, the 2025 Awards highlight the very best of British Judo. Here are our inspiring range of winners in 2025:
Club of the Year – Hackney Judo Club
Hackney Judo Club has become a beacon for inclusion and community spirit. Led by Calvin Walker-Hall and Beth, the club welcomes everyone—from juniors to adaptive players—into a supportive environment that champions growth and respect. Their outreach in schools and local projects truly embodies judo’s values.
Coach of the Year – Tim Byrne
Tim Byrne has built one of Hampshire’s most successful and inclusive clubs. His enthusiasm and empathy have inspired hundreds of young judoka, including those with additional needs. Tim’s passion for teaching and volunteering makes him a true role model in the coaching community.
Kano Way Award – Ricky Haynes
Ricky Haynes lives the spirit of mutual welfare and benefit. He has driven national inclusion programmes, supported school projects and mentored young leaders across London. His tireless efforts to make judo accessible to all make him a worthy recipient of the Kano Way Award.
Volunteer of the Year – David Gheorghiu
David Gheorghiu balances his international competition schedule with volunteering at his club and refereeing at local events. Always ready to help and inspire, David embodies the giving spirit that keeps British Judo moving forward.
Inclusion Award – Isabelle Everest
Isabelle Everest is a passionate advocate for disability inclusion in sport. A Level 1 coach and full-time wheelchair user, she challenges perceptions and promotes adaptive judo through her writing, coaching and public speaking. Isabelle continues to inspire others through action and advocacy.
Referee of the Year – Kirsty Lyons
Kirsty Lyons is recognised for her professionalism and commitment to fair play. Whether officiating regional or national events, her calm authority and mentoring of new referees make her an example to follow.
Official of the Year – Jean Cleere
Jean Cleere has provided years of behind-the-scenes excellence, ensuring competitions and events run smoothly. Her attention to detail and dedication to the sport are appreciated across the judo community.
Kata Award – Jim Mackenzie
Jim Mackenzie is celebrated for his devotion to Kata, both as a competitor and mentor. His passion for precision and discipline continues to inspire judoka to explore this traditional form of judo.
Adaptive Male Athlete of the Year – Rowan Kinsella
Rowan Kinsella has impressed with his performances and resilience in adaptive judo. His determination and sportsmanship make him an inspiration to athletes at every level.
Adaptive Female Athlete of the Year – Siobhan Lloyd
Siobhan Lloyd has enjoyed a stellar year, achieving top results while leading by example. Her positivity and drive highlight the power of adaptive judo to change lives.
Veteran Male Athlete of the Year – Patrick Bryan
Patrick Bryan continues to excel on the veteran circuit, combining competitive success with a commitment to mentoring others. He proves that judo truly is a sport for life.
Veteran Female Athlete of the Year – Sam Chraniuk
Sam Chraniuk’s achievements and dedication stand out in the veteran division. She continues to inspire others through her performance and passion for the sport both on and off the mat.

Cadet Male – Coen Gilbert (Sportif): Medalled across European Cups and earned bronze at the Cadet European Championships.

Cadet Female – Sara Coni: Gold in Genova and 5th at the EYOF after a standout international season.

Female VI – Evie Gormley (Stewart Judo Academy): Silver at the German Open and bronze at Egypt Grand Prix against world-class opposition.

Male VI – Dan Powell (Ryecroft Judo Club): Became both World and European Champion in 2025, inspiring the next generation of VI athletes.

Senior Female – Emma Reid (Melbourn Judo Club): Grand Slam Gold in Dushanbe and Grand Prix Bronze China has seen the Melbourn Judo Club fighter rise to a career high of #4 in the world.

Senior Male – Irakli Goginashvili (Palavani Judo Club): Fifth at the Peru Grand Prix, defeating the World #6 along the way has seen Irakli start his Senior career in impressive style.

Junior Female – Lola Hodson (Dragons Academy): Multiple Junior European Cup medals and 5th at the Junior Europeans in 2025 for Hodson.

Junior Male – Irakli Goginasvili (Palavani Judo Club): Junior European Champion and World Bronze medallist—the first British man to do so in 25 years.
