Nine British Judoka Set for 2025 Sarajevo European Open
Nine British judoka will compete in Bosnia and Herzegovina this weekend with one of Team GB’s 2024 Paris Olympians returning to European tour action for the first time in over a year.
In the -60kg category, Benjamin Caldwell (Camberley JC) will be the sole British representative. Caldwell has enjoyed a promising start to his 2025 campaign, claiming bronze at the Dubrovnik Senior European Cup and finishing 7th at the Amman Asian Open earlier this season.
The -66kg division will feature a strong British duo of Finlay Allan (Camberley JC) and Michael Fryer (Rush Judo), each looking to make their mark against a deep European field.
Kenneth Harris (Royal Navy Judo) will represent Great Britain in the -90kg category, beginning what promises to be a busy close to 2025. Following Sarajevo, Harris is set to compete at both the Conegliano European Open in November and the Montreal Pan American Open shortly after, his first international events since the Veteran European Championships in June 2024.
In the -100kg division, Rhys Thompson (Enfield JC) will aim to return to the podium after an injury-hit season. His last international medal came in September 2024 at the Prague European Open, and this weekend’s event will serve as valuable preparation ahead of the upcoming Zagreb and Abu Dhabi Grand Prix events.
Wesley Greenidge (Enfield JC) will take to the mat in the +100kg category, competing in just his fifth international outing of the year. Despite a limited schedule, Greenidge has found success in 2025, earning bronze medals at both the Podgorica and Dubrovnik Senior European Cups, along with a 7th-place finish at the La Nucia European Open.
In the -57kg division, Chelsie Giles (Coventry JC) returns for only her second competition since the Paris Olympic Games, following a bronze medal performance at the Prague European Open in September. She will be joined by Lanina Solley (Camberley JC), who will look to rediscover the strong form that saw her claim gold at the Riga Senior European Cup and finish 7th in Dubrovnik earlier this year.
Rounding out the British squad is an exciting return for Paris Olympian Lucy Renshall (Stewart JA), who makes her first international appearance since the Games in July 2024. Her comeback marks an encouraging moment for British Judo as she returns to elite competition.
