A Successful 2025 National Kata Championships in St Albans
The British Judo Association’s Kata Programme continues to go from strength to strength. On 6th September 2025, the Kata Commission hosted the National Kata Championships at St Albans Shizentai Judo Club, delivering another exceptional event.
A total of 33 entries from all four Home Nations competed. Although entries dipped slightly this year due to a new limit of two categories per pair, introduced to align with EJU and IJF standards, the competition remained fiercely contested. Click here for the full results.
This year saw a trial change in event organisation: the St Albans Shizentai team, led by Tori and Bob Cleevely, handled all pre-event administration, while the Kata Commission managed the competition itself. Dave Horton-Jones ensured the day ran seamlessly, with Duncan Kinnear as Head Judge and Tori Cleevely overseeing the scoring system and pre-event sheets.
This resulted in a timetable so precise that nearly every kata performance began within five minutes of its scheduled time. The venue, mats, and refreshments, provided by Bob Cleevely and the dedicated club volunteers, were praised by competitors and spectators alike.

Welsh Judo Association brought a strong contingent following their own successful National Championships, also providing two judges for the event.

Shizentai Judo Club claimed five national kata titles.

Bob and Ricky Cleevely secured the Kime-no-kata title for an incredible 12th consecutive year.
Speaking on the event, Dr. Llyr Jones, BJA Kata Chair said, “Kata competitions have really been gaining momentum in the UK. They’re a fantastic way for judoka to refine their practice and test their skills.
“With more kata becoming part of the updated Dan Grade system, we expect even greater participation—especially as judoka explore kata beyond the traditional randori-no-kata.”
Dave Horton-Jones, BJA Kata Lead said, “The move to a two-mat venue was a huge improvement, allowing categories to run simultaneously and enhancing the experience for judges, competitors, and spectators.
“We now have eight qualified judges, with two more in training and another two beginning their mentoring process. The growing number of kata courses and competitions across the UK continues to stimulate interest and involvement.”
Competitors summed it up best: “The event ran like clockwork” and “The change in venue was an inspirational move.”
The National Kata Course returns to Aldershot on 22–23 November 2025, hosted by the Southern Area and led by official Kodokan Instructor Yoshihiko Iura (8th Dan).
