British Judo Unveils Modernised Dan Grade Pathway

0 1

British Judo are pleased to announce the official launch of its modified Dan Grade Scheme.

This updated and forward-looking pathway is designed to foster, recognise, and support the development of judoka across the United Kingdom. The modified Dan Grade Scheme will take effect on 1st January 2026, marking a significant development for the sport and reinforcing the association’s ongoing commitment to excellence, integrity, and inclusivity.

Honouring Tradition, Inspiring Tomorrow

Rooted in the spirit and values of judo, the dan grade has long represented more than a simple progression in rank; it is a mark of perseverance, technical mastery, and personal growth. With the unveiling of the modified scheme, the British Judo Association seeks to honour these traditions and adapt to the evolving needs of the 21st-century judoka. Developed following consultation with technical experts, technical commissions, and senior examiners, the scheme is the product of careful research, feedback, and an unwavering commitment to delivering the best possible experience for every judoka.

Key Features of the Modified Dan Grade Scheme:

  • Modernised Curriculum: The modified scheme introduces an enhanced curriculum that encompasses the latest techniques – the 100 Kodokan techniques. These techniques form the basis of the curriculum in most judo classes They are fundamental for the education of judo teachers and coaches. They are the foundation for teaching, development, and performance and are the pathway of the IJF Academy. The scheme is a blended mix of prescriptive and creative learning. The prescriptive element offers structure and consistency. The creative element supports personal growth, innovation, and a tailored learning experience. It comprises five sections, the first two are based on fundamental skills, and the other three on performance skills.
  • IJF Grading Policy Alignment: As a national federation of the IJF, we must comply with its grading policy. In support of this and recognising the significance of kata to the development of judo techniques, kata levels for each grade have been increased. There have also been changes to the time in grade and the number of ippon wins. These changes have allowed us to align with the IJF grading policy.
  • Transparent Assessment Criteria: The assessment process has been refined to increase clarity and fairness. Detailed guidelines set transparent expectations for each dan grade, including specific technical competencies, randori performance and kata proficiency.
  • Pathways for All: Recognising the diversity of the British judo community, the scheme continues to offer tailored pathways for competitors, coaches, referees, and recreational practitioners. This ensures that all judoka, regardless of age or competitive aspirations, can find an appropriate and meaningful route to dan progression.
  • Kodokan/IJF 100 Judo Techniques: Video resources available and downloadable.
  • Continuous Professional Development: Using the 100 Kodokan techniques, the scheme supports opportunities for ongoing learning, encouraging judoka to pursue further education in coaching and refereeing.
  • Inclusivity and Accessibility: With adaptations for judoka with disabilities, the scheme reflects the Association’s mission to make judo accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

Andrew Scoular, CEO of the British Judo Association, stated:

The launch of the modified Dan Grade Scheme is an exciting milestone for British Judo. It reflects our commitment to supporting lifelong participation while upholding the integrity and excellence that dan grades represent. This scheme empowers judoka to progress with purpose, recognising their diverse contribution to the judo community.”
