Kate Howey MBE Appointed Performance Director
British Judo is delighted to announce the permanent appointment of Kate Howey MBE as the new Performance Director of the World Class Performance Programme (WCPP).
One of the most decorated judoka in British Judo history, Kate brings a wealth of experience, passion, and proven leadership to the helm of the WCPP. A double Olympic medallist and former World Champion, Kate has spent the past two decades shaping the next generation of British judoka through various coaching and leadership roles within British Judo’s athlete pathway.
Her appointment follows a rigorous two-stage recruitment process, culminating in a final assessment day involving a series of interviews with three distinct panels. These panels featured representatives from Team GB, UK Sport, the UK Sports Institute (UKSI), British Judo legend Neil Adams MBE, and British Judo World Class Performance athletes and staff.
Speaking on her appointment, Kate said:
“It’s an honour and a privilege to become the permanent Performance Director of British Judo. Judo is a major part of me as a person, and has made me who I am today, for that I will be truly grateful. My intention is always to give back, and I see this as a chance to take the sport I love in a different direction.”
“I am committed to pushing our athletes to achieve their full potential on the world stage. We have a talented group of judoka, and I’m excited to lead the programme into a new era of excellence.”
British Judo Chair Gerry Gualtieri was delighted to appoint Kate into the role permanently:
“Kate doesn’t just understand what it takes to reach the podium—she’s lived every step of that journey. Her insight as an Olympic medallist, combined with her track record of nurturing talent, gives us a unique edge as we strive to turn promise into performance.”
“I’m confident that, under Kate’s leadership, we’ll deepen our athlete-centred culture and sharpen our competitive focus all the way to Los Angeles 2028 and beyond.”
British Judo Chief Executive Andrew Scoular echoed Gualtieri’s sentiments:
“Kate is a true ambassador of our sport and an inspiring leader with a deep understanding of what it takes to succeed at the highest level. Her appointment marks a significant step forward for the Performance Programme, and we look forward to seeing her impact as we prepare for the next Olympic and Paralympic cycle.”
We warmly welcome Kate to her new role at a pivotal time for British Judo.
