Dan Powell Shortlisted for BEAA Athlete of the Month
British Judo is proud to celebrate Dan Powell’s nomination for the British Elite Athletes’ Association’s (BEAA) Athletes’ Athlete of the Month award for May — a fitting recognition of a phenomenal achievement in his career.
Dan Powell’s nomination follows his historic victory at the IBSA World Championships, where he secured his first world title in the -95KG J1 category. His incredible performance marked the pinnacle of a 15-year journey, and represents his 15th consecutive podium finish — a streak that reflects both his consistency and elite status on the world stage. Dan’s triumph also saw him rise to number one in the world rankings for the first time in his career, a testament to his dedication, resilience, and world-class talent.
He joins a shortlist of elite British athletes who excelled in May, including Success Eduan (athletics), Erin McNeice (climbing), and Callum Russell (para-cycling). All nominees have demonstrated outstanding performances across their respective sports.
The BEAA Athlete of the Month award is a special honour, voted on by fellow elite athletes who receive funding through UK Sport’s World Class Programme. It is a recognition of excellence, resilience, and inspiration — qualities that Dan continues to embody both on and off the mat.
The Athletes’ Athlete of the Month is voted for by over 1,200 current and 300 former BEAA members — elite athletes across more than 40 sports. For eligible athletes, voting is now open via the BEAA’s latest email, and the winner will be announced shortly.
Well done, Dan — and best of luck in the vote!
