Record-Breaking IAPS Judo Championships Inspire the Next Generation

0 3

Over the weekend of 10th–11th May, more than 300 young Judoka from 40 IAPS Prep Schools came together to compete in one of the most exciting Judo events on the school sports calendar.

Held under the expert guidance of Core Judo, with support from British Judo, the 2025 IAPS Judo Championships were a resounding success.

The event, designed to prioritise fairness and development, featured carefully adjusted rules and groupings to ensure parity across divisions. This inclusive approach gave coaches the confidence to enter more participants than ever before, leading to a significant increase in numbers and enthusiasm across the board.

Tony Milkins, Head Coach of Oxford School of Judo and Dragon School, praised the event, saying, “Big thanks for all your hard work and for hosting an amazing event. Here’s to next year.”

The tournament was orchestrated by Elizabeth O’Neil, whose dedication behind the scenes ensured that the weekend ran smoothly and on schedule. A standout feature of this year’s championships was the joint Coach and Referee briefing, fostering collaboration and understanding between all involved.

Another progressive change was the exclusion of take-back techniques, allowing players to attempt throws with more confidence and openness. This not only reduced injuries and minimised medical interventions but also created a safer and more encouraging environment for developing athletes. It’s a model that may well set the standard for similar events in the future.

Phillip Barr, Chair of the IAPS Sport & Pupil Experience Committee and Headteacher at St John’s Beaumont School, commented, “The event was a roaring success and Jonathon, and his entire team deserve enormous credit. Contests were close fought, reflecting their use of development rules to ensure pupils were facing opponents of similar ability. Crowds were entertained and attended in huge numbers throughout the weekend, and the pupils all left having experienced tough competition – and of course, fun.”

Barr also noted, “We feel blessed at IAPS to have such a well-organised and passionate group leading this event, which is quickly becoming one of the biggest individual sport events we organise.”

Looking ahead, Core Judo aims to grow the girls’ division further, inviting more all-girls schools to participate in 2026. A highlight of this year’s event was the presentation of awards by former IAPS girls champions, Harriet and Violette, from Coworth Flexlands and Halstead St Andrews. Now active competitors on the British Judo Circuit, their journey is a shining example of the long-term pathways that can begin with school sport.

With its emphasis on inclusivity, development, and enjoyment, the 2025 IAPS Judo Championships not only set a new standard for school sports events but also inspired the next generation of British Judoka.
