Gold for Reid and Bronze for Fryer at La Nucia European Open
Emma Reid strikes gold once again, while Michael Fryer secures his second silverware of 2025 in a triumphant weekend at the La Nucia European Open in Benidorm.
Emma Reid (Redbridge) claimed gold in the -78kg category, adding to an already impressive 2025 campaign that confirms her status as one of Britain’s most in-form judoka.
She faced tough competition throughout the day, with both her quarter-final and semi-final bouts going into golden score. In the final, Reid secured victory with a single Yuko, rounding off not just another successful weekend, but one filled with valuable experience.
Just two weeks ago, she claimed gold at the Dushanbe Grand Slam, building on her earlier silver at the Grand Prix Upper Austria and a 5th-place finish at the 2025 European Championships in Podgorica.
Reid has also just been named in the GB squad for the upcoming World Championships in Hungary, and with her current form, she’ll be one to watch on the world stage.
Another podium finish for GB came from Michael Fryer (Rush Judo), who took bronze in the -66kg division.
Fryer has now competed in six international events this year, having earned a silver medal last month at the Dubrovnik Senior European Cup and now adding a bronze to his growing 2025 collection.
At La Nucia, Fryer progressed through the rounds of 32 and 16 to reach the quarter-finals. After a narrow defeat, he entered the repechage, where he battled through a golden score victory to earn a shot at bronze.
In the medal match, Fryer again went into golden score, with the contest stretching over six minutes before he finally scored a Yuko to claim the win.
While the medal haul ended there for Great Britain, there were more promising performances with two top-seven finishes.
Wesley Greenidge (Enfield JC) placed 7th in the +100kg category, while Rory Tyrrell (Camberley) also secured 7th place in a competitive -81kg division.
Congratulations to all of our athletes!
