Witley Judo Club Celebrates Its 21st Birthday

Witley Judo Club has proudly celebrated a remarkable milestone, its 21st birthday! Since opening its doors in 2004, the club has become a pillar of the community, delivering high-quality judo training across Witley and beyond.

Over the past two decades, Witley Judo Club, along with its network of satellite clubs, has played a vital role in promoting the sport of judo in local schools and throughout the wider community. These include Witley Schools Judo, Gosden House Judo, Guildford Judo, Proud Tiger Judo, Spirit of Hollywater Judo (also known as Hollywater Judo), and Royal Grammar School Judo.

During the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the club’s commitment to its members never wavered. Club coaches and welfare officers worked hard to stay connected with families and offer support wherever possible. One coach even produced a series of judo instruction videos to help junior members continue training at home, keeping them active, engaged, and motivated during an uncertain time.

As restrictions eased, the coaching team introduced outdoor, socially distanced judo-based fitness sessions. These not only helped maintain the existing membership but also attracted new members, proving the resilience and adaptability of the club’s community spirit.

Over the years, Witley Judo Club has watched countless juniors grow, not just in their judo ability, but in confidence, discipline, and character. Several former members have gone on to represent their universities in judo, a testament to the club’s impact on and off the mat.

The club prides itself on being inclusive, welcoming members of all ages and abilities, including those with additional needs. It’s this dedication to accessibility and development that enables the club to continue to grow.

The club marked its 21st anniversary with a special day of training on 12th April 2025. Members were treated to sessions led by three guest coaches, including a distinguished 6th Dan, who shared their expertise with both junior and senior judoka.

Following the training, celebrations began where members past and present gathered to reflect on the club’s journey.
