Afghan Judoka to compete in Paris Olympics match today

Mohammad Samim Faizzad, a judoka from Afghanistan, will make his debut in the 2024 Paris Olympics today, facing off against his opponent from Austria.

The match is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, July 30th, in Paris, where Faizzad will compete against Vahid Borkhashvili from Austria.

Faizzad is among the athletes representing Afghanistan at the 2024 Paris Olympics. At 21 years old, he will be competing against a more experienced opponent, who is approximately 25 years old.

In 2016, Faizzad won a silver medal in judo for Afghanistan and has expressed that he is well-prepared for the upcoming match.

His opponent, Borkhashvili, has a Chechen heritage and has previously won various medals in different competitions. Notably, he secured a silver medal in the Olympic qualifying tournament in Tajikistan, earning his spot in the 2024 Olympics.

Meanwhile, Afghan cyclist Yulduz Hashimi competed in the women’s individual time trial at the Paris Olympics on Sunday, securing the 26th place.

The 2024 Summer Olympics officially began on Friday with a unique opening ceremony designed to showcase one of the world’s most famous cities. Paris, the capital of France, will host the Summer Olympics for three weeks under the banner of “Paris 2024.” Approximately 10,500 athletes from 206 countries are participating in this edition of the Summer Games.

The opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics was held under strict security measures along the Seine River. This is the first time the Summer Olympics have commenced outside of a stadium, in an urban setting.
