Shaw and Ede take Silver in Birmingham

0 10

British Judo claimed another three medals on the second and final day of the Birmingham Junior European Cup, taking our overall medal haul to nine for the event.

Summer Shaw and Daniel Ede both claimed silver medals in the -48kg and +100kg categories respectively, whilst Charlotte Jenman claimed bronze in the -57kg category.

Shaw entered as the number one seed following a silver medal at the Kaunas Junior European Cup last month. The 2022 European Youth Olympic Festival bronze medallist won her Pool before defeating Marta Beorlegui (ESP) to book her place in the final to face Fina-Pamedie Katendi-Nzuzi (FRA).

With nothing between the pair, and with 90-seconds of the contest remaining, Shaw got caught on the ground and was pinned for a waza-ari score. The following exchange she was caught for a further waza-ari score, handing victory to the French judoka. The result saw Shaw equal her career-best performance on the European circuit.

In the +100kg category, Ede secured his place in the final with victories against Mate Ramishvili (FRA) and Alejandro-Antonio Rojas-Arencibia (ESP) in the quarter-final and semi-final respectively.

Ede faced Matheo Akiana-Mongo (FRA) in the final event of the day, but when down by two shidos, when the referee awarded both judoka a shido a piece for not gripping Ede had to settle for silver, which was an improvement upon the bronze medal he took in 2023.

After taking -52kg gold in 2023, Jenman returned in her new weight category, -57kg in 2024. The former European Cadet Championship bronze medallist secured her place in the bronze medal contest by way of the Repechage, defeating teammate Maddie Birri to set up another all-British contest against Chloe Linkwho is in her debut year in the junior age group.

The bronze medal contest was another tense affair which was settled by shidos, when Link, who already had two to her name heading into Golden Score, was awarded a third, resulting in Jenman being awarded the bronze medal.

The result saw Link finish in 5th place. There was also a 5th place finish for James Weller-Henry (+100kg) and 7th place finishes for Birri and Zhaklin Satari (-57kg), Cameron Hickey (-90kg) and Jake Mair(-100kg).
