First Stage Selections for European Championships in Montpellier

GB Judo is pleased to announce the first stage selection for the upcoming European Judo Championships in Montpellier, France from 3rd – 5th November 2023.

Defending European Champion, Chelsie Giles (Coventry Judo Club) has been selected to compete in the -52kg category whilst former European Junior and u23 champion and now world number one, Lucy Renshall (SKK; Pete Blood) will compete in the -63kg category.

Lele Nairne (Bradley Stoke; Pete Douglas) will make her senior European debut alongside Acelya Toprak (Metro JC/ Relentless Judo; Darren Hawney/ Fitzroy Davies) in the -57kg category whilst there are selections for former European Junior champion Kelly Petersen-Pollard (Hardy Spicer; Fitzroy Davies) and Jemima Yeats-Brown (Ryecroft Judokwai; Ian Oliver) in the -70kg category.

Three-time European Championship bronze medallist, Natalie Powell (Irfon JC) will be joined by Emma Reid (Redbridge JC; Steve Sandy), who made her senior European Championship debut last year in Sofia, in the -78kg category.

In the men’s category, former European Junior Championship bronze medallist Lachlan Moorhead (Penistone JC; Matt Moorhead) will compete in the -81kg category whilst following 5th place finishes at the Austria Grand Prix earlier this year, Jamal Petgrave (Westcroft Judo Club; Andy Ede) and Rhys Thompson (Enfield JC; George Hyslop) have been named in the -90kg and -100kg categories respectively.

Nekoda Smythe-Davis (Ealing Judo Club; Jo Crowley) has been named as a reserve for the -57kg category.

The team will be finalised with the second stage selections on week commencing 23rd October.
