Weekend Round-Up: Nihon Dutch Open and European Judo Championships – Champions League
This weekend saw GB judoka in action at the Nihon Dutch Open and the European Judo Championships – Champions League.
Nihon Dutch Open
The GB Judo Para-Potential team travelled to Venray, Netherlands, for the Nihon Dutch Open.
The Para-Potential team came home with three gold medals, four silver and two bronze.
Kirsten Taylor (David Scobie; Tayside JC) edged our teammate Lesley Reid (Redbridge JC) as GB claimed gold and silver medals in the +78kg category.
There was another all-GB final as Emily Betts (Clacton JC) beat Caitlin Leigh (Bacup JC) to gold in the -70kg category.
Oxford University student Miles Solomon won gold in the -81kg category whilst there were silver medals for Jake Pasquill (Bacup JC) and Murray McConnell (Sportif).
Jacobean Edwards (Cherry Judo Club) and Rico Amediku both claimed bronze whilst Harry Ashton finished outside the medals in 5th.
The Adaptive Team followed up their recent impressive form as Daniel Wealleans (Team AS Judo) claimed gold on her debut alongside Joshuha Hodkinson (SKK; Pete Blood) and Christopher Murphy (Shettleston; Alex Reid). For Hodkinson and Murphy, these medals added to the gold medals they won in Australia at the Virtus Oceania Asia Games earlier this month.
Nikki McDermott (South Shields; Joe Foster) claimed silver along with Thomas Mawdsley (Mill JC; Colin Mawdsley) and Joshua Hughes (Wirral JC; Chris Soakell) and there were bronze medals for Skye Westwood (Rush Judo; Matt Rush), Ben Thompson (Retford JC), Arron Bowen-Knowles (Rainhill Rockets) and Rowan Kinsella (Bradley Stoke). Craig Edwards finished 5th.
Following the individual competition, the VI and Adaptive teams combined to take overall team bronze in the team competition.
European Judo Championships – Champions League
Four GB Judoka were in action at the European Judo Championships, Champions League in Gori, Georgia, on Saturday.
Competing for French team USOLJJ, Lucy Renshall (SKK, Pete Blood) helped her team take gold defeating fellow French club Red Star Club De Champigny, which included Chelsie Giles (Coventry JC, Simon Moss) and Nekoda Davis (Ealing JC, Jo Crowley).
Renshall won all three of her contests through the day, defeating Gwenaelle Viard in the Pool contest. Renshall then defeated Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard to help her team progress to the Finals where she defeated Barbara Harel.
Davis and Giles both won their Quarter-Final contests against Julie Beurskens and Naomi Van Krevel respectively to progress to the Semi-Finals to face Portuguese club, Sport Lisboa E Benfica, which contained Jemima Yeats-Brown (Ryecroft, Ian Oliver).
Yeats-Brown’s team won their opening-round contest against Etoile Sportive Blanc Mesnil. Yeats-Brown lost her contest against Miriam Butkereit but helped her team progress to the Semi-Finals with victory against Vlada Kopnyayeva of Valencia Club De Judo.
Giles defeated Reka Pupp in the opening contest of the Semi-Final, and the team flew into the 2-0 lead as Davis defeated Telma Monteiro. Yeats-Brown was defeated in the penultimate contest by Clarisse Agbegnenou.
In the bronze medal contest, Yeats-Brown helped her team to bronze with a victory against Minel Akdeniz of Turkish club, Galatasaray.
Davis was first up for her team in the final but was defeated by Priscilla Gneto. Giles was last to fight in the final, and with her team already assured of the silver medal, she was defeated by Astride Gneto.
