Fourteen Senior British Champions crowned

0 6

British Judo ended the year on a high as 14 Senior British Championships were crowned at the EIS Sheffield as the traditional end to the domestic calendar returned.

Team Bath saw three of its judoka crowned National Champions as Chloe Robyns-Landricombe (-52kg), Gregg Varey (-66kg) and Rhys Thompson (-100kg) all won gold.

For Varey this medal represented his 18th national medal having picked up a medal at every British Championship he has competed at since the age of 11.

With Tokyo 2020 Olympic bronze medallist Chelsie Giles stepping up to the -57kg category, it left the -52kg category open for a number of women to claim the title. It was Robyns-Landricombe that defeated Kirsty Marsh to win her first Senior British title.

Sam Hall continued his scintillating end of season form as he dominated the -60kg category to add the British title to the two IJF World Tour medals he has claimed in 2021.

Lachlan Moorhead faced Danny Williams in the -81kg Final

The -81kg category was one of the most anticipated finals of the day as recent Abu Dhabi Grand Slam bronze medallist Lachlan Moorhead faced London 2012 Olympian Danny Williams. It was Moorhead who emerged victorious after registering two waza-ari scores to round off a fantastic last month of competition.

Acelya Toprak and Lele Nairne contested the -57kg final in what turned out to be one of the finals of the day. The pair met earlier this season at the Malaga European Open, where Toprak was victorious. A result that was matched as she won by a waza-ari score.

It was a case of blink and you will miss it as Lucy Renshall (featured image) won her -63kg final in less than 5 seconds.

Kelly Petersen-Pollard defended her -70kg title to end what has been a fantastic first full season in the senior ranks.

Wesley Greenidge and James Austin had the stage to themselves as the +100kg final brought the championships to a close. Greenidge scored a waza-ari early on and kept 2012 Olympian Austin at bay to claim the British title.

British Judo Events Team member Emma Reid took a break from helping to run the British Championships to win her second senior British title in the -78kg category to cap off what has been a superb season having made her IJF World Tour debut and picking up two medals, including gold at the recent Abu Dhabi Grand Slam.

Amy Platten added the Senior British title to the European U23 Championship bronze she won last month.

Tokyo 2020 Olympian Sarah Adlington returned to competition for the first time since the Games to win the +78kg title.

Daniel Powell and Jamal Petgrave both retained their -73kg and -90kg titles respectively.
