Two top judo stars kicked out of Olympics after going sightseeing around Tokyo in huge Covid protocol breach

TWO top judo stars have been KICKED OUT of the Olympics for breaking strict Covid rules.

The pair were booted out of the event after they were discovered to have gone on a sightseeing tour around Tokyo.

The Tokyo Olympic organising committee said Saturday a person involved in the games has been stripped of accreditation for leaving the athletes’ village to go sightseeing.

That is, of course, a major violation of its anti-Covid-19 rules.

It is the first time that a participant of the Olympics has been deprived of accreditation since the games began July 23.

SIGHTSEEING BLUNDER

Organising committee spokesman Masanori Takaya confirmed the news at a press briefing but the chief failed to provide any further details.

Promising that more will be provided Sunday, Takaya declined to disclose information such as the nationality of the offender.

He also refused to state whether the persons were athletes or whether any others were involved.

Takaya said: “No one must leave the athletes’ village for the purpose of sightseeing.”

He also added that the decision was made on Friday.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, athletes and all other Olympic credential holders are required to strictly follow the Covid-19 ‘playbook’ rules.

STATE OF EMERGENCY

Several reports state that the nationality of the two persons who have been kicked out is Georgian and both are male.

However, no official confirmation has yet been made.

It comes as Japan extended the state of emergency in Tokyo after a surge in coronavirus cases.

The country’s Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga warned infections, fuelled by the more infectious Delta variant, were spreading at an unprecedented rate as he urged the nation to stay watching the action at home.

After initially having success at keeping cases and the death rate low, Japan is now seeing record cases.

Nationwide daily cases topped 10,000 for the first time on Thursday with over a third of them being in Tokyo.

The city has seen three straight days of record cases, even though it is already under a state of emergency.

There were 27 new infections at the Games on Friday, which brings the total since the start of July to more than 200.
