Lucy Renshall and Amy Livesey in action on day 4 of the World Championships

0 8

Lucy Renshall and Amy Livesey were in action on the fourth day of the IJF World Championships competing in the -63kg category.

Lucy Renshall defeated Isabel Puche (ESP) in Round 2 after an opening round bye. An ouchi gari waza-ari-awasete-ippon seeing her safely into Round 3 to face Andreja Leski (SLO).

The Round 3 contest was a real battle between two fighters at the top of their game. World number 5, Leski, claimed bronze at the Doha Masters at the start of the year, followed by two silver medals at the Tel Aviv and Tashkent Grand Slams, before taking bronze at the European Championships, whilst Renshall claimed gold at the Antalya Grand Slam.

There was nothing between the two fighters and as the contest reached the 10-minute mark, Renshall was unfortunately awarded a third penalty shido, handing victory to Leski.

Elsewhere, Amy Livesey was defeated by Alexia Castilhos (BRA), a fighter ranked just 2 places behind her in the world rankings, in the opening round. Castilhos scored a waza-ari early in the contest before scoring a second waza-ari-awasete-ippon to progress to Round 2.

Thursday is the fifth day of action at the World Championships in Budapest.

Gemma Howell has an opening round bye and will face former World Championship silver medallist, Maria Perez (PUR) in Round 2. Meanwhile, Max Stewart will face Aleksejs Zarudnevs (LAT) in the opening round of the -90kg competition.

Preliminary Rounds start at 09:00am (BST) with Final Block scheduled to commence at 16:00 (BST) on each competition day.
