The Vees opened their BCHL Exhibition schedule with a 7-4 loss against the Trail Smoke Eaters, Friday at Cominco Arena. The Vees did look like a team playing their first pre-season game and a team experiencing their first four-hour road trip to the West Kootenays. Lots of rust but a few bright spots throughout Friday’s game.

Penticton got goals from four different scorers, including 15-year-old Eli McKamey. Max Heise, Simon Meier, and Caton Ryan also scored for the Vees. Landon Wright chipped in with two assists.

Goaltender Andrew Ness started last night’s game and surrendered five goals on 14 shots in 28 minutes of work. Will Ingemann played the back half and yielded two goals on 15 shots.

The Vees scored once on the power play but did concede three power play goals on three penalties.

Sharky Nowek, who is celebrating his 18th birthday today, will get the start in net tonight. A special night for the Penticton product and graduate of the Penticton Minor Hockey Association. You can bet there will be a large contingent of fans cheering him on tonight. Other lineup changes include Captain Conyr Hellyer, Anselmo Rego, and defenceman Matthew Biotti all making their pre-season debuts. The three veterans sat out Friday’s contest.

After tonight, the Vees have two more pre-season games next weekend against West Kelowna and Salmon Arm.

The Vipers were shutout in their exhibition opener Friday, losing 4-0 to the West Kelowna Warriors Kal-Tire Place. It was a much younger lineup last night for the Vipers, as they will insert more veterans into tonight’s game against the Vees. Vernon is dressing 10 returning players from last year’s team that lost to the Vees in the second round of the BCHL Playoffs.

George Stavrianeas , Erik Pastro, Shea Busch, Lukas McCloskey, and Carson McGinley are just a few returnees making their preseason debuts tonight for Vernon.

Marko Bilic, an 18-year-old out of Toronto, is listed as the Vipers starting goaltender tonight. High-end prospect who played at Cushing Academy last season. He’s committed to Arizona State. Bilic stopped all 12 shots he faced last night in half a game.
