Corus Axes Kingston Radio Personnel

Earlier this week, Corus Entertainment Inc. announced they'd be firing 300 full-time employees before the end of August. Yes, things are that bad. Some big names were recently tapped on the shoulder. Nobody at Corus is safe.

If you listen to Toronto Mike'd, particularly our wicked fun monthly Toast episodes, you know Toast regular Bob Willette was relieved of his duties as PD of the Corus radio cluster. That's 96.3 BIG FM (CFMK-FM) and Fresh 104.3 (CKWS-FM). Bob's a radio lifer who loves the industry, so when he got axed, it was clear Kingston radio was in trouble.

Today we learned everyone Bob left behind at 96.3 BIG FM (CFMK-FM) and Fresh 104.3 (CKWS-FM) is now in the same boat. Corus cut 'em all. Whatever airs on these stations now will be voice-tracked from elsewhere.

By the way, to save face, some veteran broadcasters when told their time is up will opt to spin their dismissal as "moving on to other projects" or to "spend more time with the family" or even "retirement". Don't believe the hype. There are many more cuts to come this summer, and no matter how they're spun, this is Corus cutting payroll the way Bart cut class in "The Boy Who Knew Too Much".
