Calder Cup Winner Passes Away at 43

The Phantoms are saddened to announce the news of the sudden and shocking passing of former left wing and Calder Cup Champion Tony Voce. The father of three girls was only 43 years old.

Voce made history as the first-ever Philadelphia native to sign with the Philadelphia Flyers organization. In parts of three seasons with the Philadelphia Phantoms, Voce played 181 games scoring 58 goals with 57 assists for 115 points from 2004 through 2007. Voce was a member of the Calder Cup Championship team in 2004-05 scoring 22 goals in his rookie season. He began his career making a powerful and talented squad that had an AHL record 17 game win streak early in the historic season.

The Archbishop Ryan High School product became the first Pennsylvania-born player to win the Calder Cup joining Phantoms teammate R.J. Umberger (from Pittsburgh).

Voce has a Phantoms franchise record that still stands today as the only player to score four goals in a game. His “hat trick plus one” came on February 11, 2006 against the Chicago Wolves as part of a season during which he led the Philadelphia Phantoms with 28 goals.

Voce was a Hobey Baker Finalist and First-Team All-American as a senior at Boston College. He won an NCAA Championship with the Eagles as a Freshman. Voce was inducted into the Boston College Varsity Club Hall of Fame in 2022.

The Philadelphia Flyers added the following statement:

“It is with deep sadness that we have learned of the sudden passing of Tony Voce. Tony was a member of the Flyers organization for three seasons, one of which included a Calder Cup Championship with the Philadelphia Phantoms and their magical run to the title in 2005. However, Tony was more than just a member of our organization, he was a born and raised native of Philadelphia. He learned to play the game he loved in our city and built a successful collegiate career that saw him win a National Championship and become a First Team All-American with Boston College before signing with his hometown Flyers. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this incredibly difficult time.”

The Phantoms’ thoughts are with his family and friends and all who were touched by his warmth, humor, kindness and generosity.
