Weekend Review - 15th February

0 14

It's been a while since the last update on these pages. The indoor season has been and gone - where the 2s won the league! But now it is back to outdoor activities for Western Lettings Hillhead. Storm Dennis was not enough to stop the five games of outdoor hockey going ahead yesterday, although admittedly it was a miserable day. A massive well done to all players, spectators and umpires for persevering and getting through it!

50th Anniversary Ball & Dinner

Western Lettings Hillhead 1s 0-4 Grange 1s - Scottish Premiership - Fettes Academy

The first team were back in league action against top of the table Grange yesterday. It took until the second quarter for the game to truly come alive, unfortunately it was at the wrong end as Grange opened up a two goal lead before half time. The third quarter saw no further goals, however as Hillhead pushed to get back into the game Grange found themselves with further chances and the match finished 0-4 to Grange.

Western Lettings Hillhead 2s 3-4 Erskine Stewarts Melville - Friendly - Old Anniesland

The 2s second half pre-season continued on Saturday having seen off Uddingston 2s 3-2 during the week spirits were high going into their match against ESM. Unfortunately, it wasn't to be as they succumbed 3-4 to the Edinburgh side. Scorers were Matt Carder, Josh Phillips and Craig Hilton. Thoughts shift to Tuesday's friendly with Clydesdale to hopefully pick up a win but more importantly put in a good performance.

Thanks to Willie Mckechnie and Gordon Macintyre Kemp for umpiring.

Western Lettings Hillhead 4s 1-2 GHK 1s - West District Division 2 - Old Anniesland

The wind and rain did not dampen a fiery encounter between local rivals GHK 1s and our 4s in a crucial match at the top of West District 2. In an even first half, GHK opened the scoring before Hillhead fired back just before half time. The first half also saw a period with both teams down a player which opened up the game. The second half was more of the same with both sides squandering very good chances before Hillhead went down a man with 20 minutes to go. GHK took advantage of this by finding a second and ultimately winning goal. There were chances to equalise but this time it wasn't to be.

Thanks to Greg Lee for umpiring!

Western Lettings Hillhead 5s 4-0 Anchor 1s - West District Division 2 - Old Anniesland

The 5s had a rough time last week losing 9-1 away to Uddingston. There were actually many positives to take from that performance and the biggest factor in that defeat was the lack of a goalkeeper. Availability issues once again saw the 5s step out onto the pitch without a goalkeeper in a crucial match against Anchor. However, a phenomenal performance saw the 5s keep a clean sheet and Andy Kidd picked up a hattrick - the first of his career! Andy Macey scored the other goal. THis was a very important result to increase the gap from the relegation places.

Thanks to Alastair Baxter for umpiring.

Western Lettings Hillhead Development Squad (7s) 2-7 Western 4s - West District Division 3 North - Old Anniesland

The final match of the afternoon saw our youngsters face off against league leader Western 4s, Western scored the opening goal but were immediately pegged back to 1-1 from the restart. Ronan McGeoch and Douglas Dando combined from halfway line to the Western circle before Douglas fired a shot into the roof of the net from the baseline. Goal of the day for sure and a contender for goal of the season! Western took it up a few gears and showed why they are undefeated so far. Douglas got a second goal after driving round the edge of the circle and firing past the Western keeper but the game was gone at this point.

This was a vast improvement on the first meeting of the season and showed how far our boys have come against a significantly more experienced team. Well done boys.

Thanks to Charles Tyler for umpiring.
