Ryder Cup 2025 – What It Meant and What’s Next
The Ryder Cup 2025 was an incredible event to watch. A tournament with many highlights, some controversy due to the audience’s behaviour, and of course the European victory. While we are still enjoying the memories, we are already looking to the future. Not at 2027 or 2029, although we think they will be exciting years for the Ryder Cup as well. Our eyes are set on 2031.
In this article, we want to recap the Ryder Cup 2025 and take a look at the highlights of the tournament, before we discuss the Ryder Cup 2031, which will take place at Camiral Golf & Wellness, a truly spectacular course in beautiful Catalonia, Spain.
Ryder Cup 2025 Highlights
Venue & Dates
The 2025 Ryder Cup took place on the Bethpage Black Course, located in Farmingdale, New York. The event ran from September 26th to September 28th.
Final Score & Standings
Europe beat USA by a score of 15 to 13 and it was a close tournament.
Europe had a commanding lead after the first two days.
The first day, Friday the 26th of September came to an end with Europe being ahead by 5.5 points to 2.5.
Saturday the 27th of September ended in a similar manner, with Europe scoring 6 points that day, and USA scoring 2 points.
Going into the final day, the total score was 11.5 to 4.5 with Europe in the lead – the largest European lead in history. However, the singles played on Sunday the 28th proved to be the USA’s strong suit, leading to them dominating the day in terms of points scored.
The Americans managed to secure a dominating 8.5 points on the Sunday compared to the 3.5 points scored by the Europeans. This point total secured by the Americans is historic: it tied for the most points won in a single session since 1979.
But though their performance was incredible, the Americans could not recover from the setback they suffered on the first two days, and the lead secured by Europe was enough to cushion the blow from Sunday. Ultimately, this resulted in a European win of 15 to 13.
Key Moments That Defined the Event
In more ways than one, this was a historic Ryder Cup for both sides.
Europe managed to secure their first away win since 2012, leading to the first American defeat on US soil since the infamous ‘Miracle at Medinah’.
The 11.5 to 4.5 European lead going into day 3 is record-breaking as well: this is the biggest lead in European history.
It makes sense then that only a record-breaking lead can withstand a record-tying comeback attempt. The USA’s 8.5 points won on Sunday is tied with a record for the most points won in a single session, set in 1979.
Shane Lowry’s putt on the 18th hole against Russell Henley was vital as well, securing the essential half-point needed to give Europe 14 points needed to bring back the Ryder Cup.
Ultimately, it was Tyrrell Hatton’s half-point scored against Collin Morikawa that ended the American comeback dream and locked in a European victory.
However, we cannot discuss the Ryder Cup 2025 without mentioning the crowd. Highly passionate, the American crowd found themselves in some controversy. They were criticised for shouting personal insults aimed at players and their family members, as well as chants and yells during backswings and putts which caused pauses in play.
Key Players to Know from Ryder Cup 2025
European Standouts
The European team presented a unified front, but there are three players that stand out due to their exceptional performance and the role they played in the team.
- Tommy Fleetwood was the top overall point scorer for Europe, helping build the lead that ultimately secured the lead Europe needed to withstand the American comeback on Sunday.
- Tyrrell Hatton went undefeated for the entire tournament and ultimately secured the half-point needed to secure victory for Europe.
- Rory McIlroy was described by Graeme McDowell as the driving force behind the European team and a leader who led by example.
American Players Worth Watching
While they may have lost, the American team is still full of impressive players. Some players to keep an eye on going forward are:
- Scottie Scheffler is the current number 1 player in the world. Despite a performance of 0-4 in foursomes/fourballs, we’re expecting him to be on the US team for years to come, locking in the top position on the US team’s roster.
- Xander Schauffele was tied for the top spot of points contribution for the US team in the 2025 Ryder Cup. Their performance during the singles was vital in helping the USA’s attempt at a comeback. We expect him to be an experienced veteran in the future.
- Cameron Young was the youngest player on the team, and while it was his debut, he co-led the US team in points. We expect him to have a long career as a member of the American team.
