Captains Corner – September 2021

0 9

September is now behind us which basically means that we are 75% into this year already. Only two months and a bit before we are all celebrating Christmas. Let’s all hope and pray that Uncle Cyril does not close us down for the festive period and that we can celebrate the Christmas holidays. It is looking promising, I must say.

September was certainly busy at the club, and we had a jol of note. We did work our butts off, but it was extremely rewarding. Firstly, we had the opening of the deck with the ladies’ and men’s committee enjoying cocktails and snacks with their spouses on the deck. Very enjoyable and lekker to get together.

Then we had Spring Day which was loads of fun. Everyone dressed up and the course was full, with a great vibe in the lapa later. Of course, the ladies won the best dressed fourball because they really know how to go all out. I must say it was very difficult to decide who of them was best dressed but in the end, it was the fourball of Pat Wessels, Jenny Johnson, Jenny Albrechts and Dale Franklin.

Two weeks later we had CANSA Day where the ladies’ decided our Mandela Day initiative was to collect funds for CANSA. Our initial target was R20 000 and with the help of all players and sponsors on the day we managed to pay R29 770 to CANSA which they were overwhelmed with. Thanks once again to all who assisted. You members at the club ROCK.

Then we had Heritage Day the following weekend and each player received a boerewors roll on the Saturday which was sponsored by the Saturday morning field fines kitty. Well, done!

We look forward to a great October, maybe we should look at arranging an Oktoberfest????

Leagues

The Men’s Handicap league side has one more game left, and they need to win just to ensure that they stay in the B Division. They are playing against Bryanston on Sunday 10 October and would appreciate some support if you are available.

The Junior League side finished in an admirable 4th position. Awesome stuff!!!

Our Scratch League side is 5th in the league with a number of games to go still. Good luck for the rest of the season, hang in there.

The Ladies Sunday League side finished on top of their division, and they will now play in the semi-finals on the 10th October.

General

Pam Koertzen, who is the Ladies treasurer was recently honored as a founder and honorary member of the Western Gauteng Ladies Union. Congratulations Pam!

There are two items about the competition fees which I would like to air with you all. Firstly, I believe we need to up this fee. Currently we are only paying R15 competition fee and if you win a comp, you only just manage to win enough money to buy a round of drinks. Not even enough to cover your next game. I believe we should double the fee to R30 per game. The second item is that some members who are playing on a Saturday are refusing to pay the competition fee. I would just like to remind all the members that all competition fees are compulsory on a Saturday and Wednesday, see below the extract from our standing orders:

A new habit has crept into the game since this new handicap system has been introduced. It involves the scoring according to the R&A rules. Please see the diagram below:

This means that your maximum score for a hole is the par for the hole plus two plus your strokes and that is laid down by the R&A, it is not a local CGGU rule. If anyone would like to see a copy of the handicapping manual, they may feel free to mail me and I will forward them a copy.

One last item, if you in the habit of using a cart to play your golf at our club please try to avoid driving over the sprinkler heads. There are delicate diaphragms inside the heads and are easily damaged and cost about R7000 to replace. Thanks all.

I hope you all have a fantastic month and play great golf.

I will see you all on the fairways of our great course.

Happy birthday to all our members who celebrate their birthday during the month of October.
