I am in agreement with Thom but will try to provide more detail.Back to the tee playing 6.?.?
The ball that was in the fairway was lying three (it doesn't matter which ball the player thought he was playing) so when it is at rest on the green, it is lying 4. However, when the player arrives at the green he realizes that the ball is lost and so he must play from where his previous stroke was made, which is the tee, because the played ball never became a ball in play (assuming it was played in the fairway at a point further from the hole than where the original ball was likely to be).
Of course, if he searched for his original ball and found it, he would play that ball as Thom has said. Thom will correct any errors I've made.
