Captains Corner – May 2021

0 22

The month of May is normally dedicated to those wonderful women we call our mothers and I sincerely hope that all the mothers in the club were spoilt rotten on Mothers Day.

While we are on the topic of Women, I am sure you have all been receiving messages regarding the weekend’s club results and any golf days that might be happening at the club or news of upcoming events. This is all thanks to Ester Van Der Merwe, who has joined us as a marketing consultant. We are incredibly pleased to have you on board Ester and the difference is already amazing.

The Ladies Section had their Ladies Open on the 19th May and a word of congratulations must go out to the organisers, it was a day very well organised. Good luck for any future golf days.

A Mixed Open is being arranged for the 6th June and all members are encouraged to support the day. I know it will be a great success again.

It has come to my attention that a number of people do not know the rules of completing a scorecard, so I did a bit of googling and came up with the following 14 important rules regarding golf scorecards.

14 Important Golf Scorecard Rules to Remember

  1. Recording the correct handicap on the card is solely your responsibility as the player.
  2. If you fail to record your handicap, or play off a handicap higher than that to which you are entitled (and this affects the number of strokes received), you will be disqualified from the handicap element of a Strokeplay competition, though your score will still stand in any concurrent scratch competition.
  3. If you record too low a handicap on your card, your net score will stand based on that handicap.
  4. At the end of the round, all you are signing for is your gross score on each hole.
  5. Should you sign for a gross score on a hole lower than that actually taken, unfortunately you will be disqualified.
  6. Should you sign for a higher score on a hole than that taken, the higher score stands, but you will not be disqualified.
  7. Contrary to what some believe, you do not need to initial mistakes or corrections on the scorecard.
  8. The scorecard must be signed by you and your marker (or markers if another person has had to take over) and returned as soon as possible on completion of the round.
  9. Sometimes, this will be to a recorders’ area, but often simply to a box in the clubhouse or changing room.
  10. Once it has been returned, no alterations can then be made to the scorecard.
  11. If one or both of the required signatures are missing, you will be disqualified under Rule 3.3b.
  12. Returning the card “as soon as possible” does not mean immediately, nor does it mean hours later. You might have a long trek to the area where it is to be returned if, for example, you have started on a tee some way from the clubhouse.
  13. And even if computerised scoring is in operation, it is what is recorded on the physical scorecard that is all-important, rather than what might be input in error into a computer.
  14. Finally if the scorecards are prepared for you, do make sure you swap before you mark and sign, or you will end up signing for the wrong scores a la Mark Roe in the 2003 Open at Royal St George’s.

The Rotary Club from Monument District has now started revamping our warmup nets next to the 1st and 10th tee boxes and they are looking so much better. Thanks a stack you guys, you do great community work.

This month we are having a Captains Draw again and I hope that most of you will make an effort to attend. Come have a glass of sherry with us and let’s beat the cold weather. Plus the jackpot is standing at R27500.00 with the Joker draw at well over R10 000.00 and the ladies will also be doing their regular lucky draw, and there just might be a surprise as well. Rusty will be having a curry and rice special and if you have tasted his curry before it is certainly worth it at R65.00 per plate.

All the league sides are now in full swing so please make an effort to come and support our sides at the club. Maybe pop around for some lunch and a beer on a Sunday afternoon. We will be updating the tab on the website with regard to the league sides on a monthly basis so I will not place them on this page.

The knockouts will also be updated on a monthly basis on the website and we ask that you please make sure your game is played on time.

Happy birthday to all our members who celebrated their birthday during the month of May.
