With the UK still very much in lockdown, the majority of sporting venues and establishments remain shut – but when will golf courses reopen?

There are no ifs, ands or putts about it – social distancing remains for everyone’s safety, and this includes golf ranges staying closed.

But Boris Johnson is set to announce his plan to ease out of lockdown on February 22 and there are reports the ‘stay at home’ message could be scrapped next month.

The reopening of certain venues could lead to a more normal summer 2021 that will hopefully include sunny days being spent on the golf course.

Some call it a sport, others consider it a good walk spoiled. But if you’re keen to get back in the swing of things, could golf courses be reopening soon?

People can expect to get a clearer indication on when golf courses will reopen in England following the Prime Minister’s announcement on February 22.

All eyes will be on Mr Johnson when he announces England’s plan to ease out of lockdown with current lockdown rules lasting until March 8.

According to The Times, outdoor activity is likely to be permitted in the first phase of easing lockdown.

The report states ‘team and individual sports such as golf and tennis, along with limited social gatherings outside, would therefore be possible within weeks of a planned return of schools from March 8.’

Following the initial lockdown last spring, golf courses were one of the first sports facilities to be reopened.

They were also able to stay open in the local tiered restrictions, including in tier four areas.

When the government allows play to resume, regularly updated ‘Play Safe, Stay Safe’ protocols for playing the game should be observed by all golfers and golf clubs.

Current lockdown measures in Wales run until February 19 while restrictions are also in place in Scotland until the end of the month.

In Northern Ireland, lockdown was recently extended until March 5.

English golf courses have been closed since early January – and golf courses in Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland have been shut since December.

Golf is currently permitted in Scotland, but only under strict restrictions.

Courses and driving ranges can remain open providing appropriate steps are taken to ensure compliance with the current guidance.

In level 4 areas, all indoor clubhouse and hospitality facilities should remain closed.

Takeaways can no longer allow customers indoors, and must instead operate from a hatch or doorway, while the sale of alcohol for consumption outdoors is not permitted in all level 4 areas.
