Concord’s Yealimi Noh shoots 66, grabs share of lead at LPGA event

Concord teenager Yealimi Noh had the best round of the week with a 5-under-par 66 on Friday to grab a share of the lead with Jessica Korda (69) and Anna Nordqvist (68) at 4-under 138 at the Volunteers of America Classic at The Colony, Texas, the final tuneup before the U.S. Women’s Open next week at Champions Golf Club in Houston.

Noh, 19, the 2018 U.S. Girls’ Junior winner, had six birdies — including four in a row — and a bogey.

“I feel really good about how I’m hitting it,” Noh said. “Just hit a lot of greens today and made a couple up-and-downs.”

Lindsey Weaver was a stroke behind the leaders after a 68.

• Spectators will not be allowed at next year’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, tournament officials announced.

The event, scheduled for Feb. 11-14 at Pebble Beach, Spyglass Hill and Monterey Peninsula Country Club, typically draws sizable galleries given the presence of top tour pros and big-name celebrities. Friday’s news follows a similar announcement this week by officials with the PGA Tour event at Torrey Pines in San Diego.

Monterey County guidelines, like those in many counties throughout California, do not permit live audiences at professional sporting events because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson and Jordan Spieth are among the tour pros who usually play at Pebble. Next year’s amateur field is expected to include familiar faces such as actor/comedian Bill Murray, and new faces such as Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts, who is to make his tournament debut.
