Just like to share an interesting incident that occurred yesterday when De Chambeau 's ' ball was on the apron of the green directly in line with Mickelson chip . De Chambeau marked his ball and lifted it using two fingers and then placed it on the ground several feet away - a good method that players should use to avoid any accusations of cleaning.
When De Chambeau replaced his ball he carefully used the line on the ball to align his putt ( line of play)
He looked again from behind and then picked up his marker.
At this point a question was raised by either Mcilroy or Mickelson aas to whether the ball could be replaced in this way as the line on the ball was not in this original position when lifted. They quickly decided that this was ok.
It had been queried by one of the players in a previous tournament.
The point of this posting is that If De Chambeau had thought the line was slightly out when he first replaced it , and had then
" re - tweaked the line direction , he would have been subject to a penalty, even if the ball marker was still in position and had not been lifted. The ball was in play and there would be no authority to touch.
Not sure if DeChambeau knew this or was just lucky that he was happy with the line's direction .
So a warning to all those who use a line on the ball and how easily a penalty could have arisen if the concentration just strays for a second .
