PIERS Morgan was stopped for speeding in his car as he headed to a golf tournament this month, he has admitted.

The 55-year-old Good Morning Britain host was pulled over as he raced to a Paddy Power event at the Centurion Club in Hemel Hempstead but said: “It was a fair cop.”

Writing in his Mail column Piers revealed his diary entry from Friday 5 June, admitting: “Things didn’t start well when I was stopped for speeding a mile from the club.

“It was a fair cop – I did toy with pulling a Dominic Cummings-style ‘I was only testing my eyesight’ excuse, but thought better of it.”

Cummings, the government’s senior advisor, claimed that he drove to Barnard Castle in April “to see if I could drive safely” after his vision was affected by coronavirus.

Piers won the tournament – but was mercilessly mocked by a rival player, former cricket star Freddie Flintoff, when he tumbled off his folding chair in a comedy fall that was captured on camera.

The star recounts the moment, explaining: “At 55, and not exactly size zero, there is a certain unstoppable momentum to such a moment, and I tumbled painfully backwards on to the rough terrain with an almighty crash.

“Flintoff instantly sprang out of his own chair and set off on a wild cackling charge past me screaming ‘YEESSSSSS!!!!!!!’ as if he’d just taken a hat-trick at Lord’s in an Ashes Test match. ”

The tumble came after Piers won the morning challenge with pro golfer partner Tommy Fleetwood as big-time sport returned to the UK earlier this month.

They saw off challenges from teams including Peter Crouch and Paul McGinley, Freddie Flintoff and Andrew ‘Beef’ Johnston and Jamie Redknapp and Thomas Bjorn.
