Driving Range Tips

Practice makes perfect in any sport, and golf isn’t an exception. One of the best places to practice golf is at a driving range, which many golf courses provide. Professional golfers spend several hours every day practicing to find potential problems in their swing. Practice like a pro with these driving range tips to fix flaws in your swing that may be hurting your game and lowering your golf score.

Stretch And Warm-Up

Swinging a golf club requires several muscles, which must be loosened before you start to prevent injury. Warm up your muscles with a good stretch of your arms, shoulders, legs, and back, such as:

  • From a standing position, lean over and touch your toes. This simple stretch helps loosen your lower back and hamstrings.
  • Link your hands together and lift your arms above the head to stretch your shoulders and upper back.
  • Slowly swing a club back and forth several times to further loosen your arms and back muscles.

Dedicate about 10 minutes to stretching to ensure all your muscles are warmed up safely and ready to swing those clubs.

Take Your Time

Don’t feel as if you must rush through 100 shots to make the most of your time. Instead, make every ball count, even if that means you only hit half as many balls during your session. Taking your time enables you to concentrate on each swing so you can prevent bad habits from developing. Instead of smashing each ball as far as you can without any thought, treat each shot as if you were playing an actual game with precision. Do your regular pre-shot routine, take practice swings, and focus on where and how far you want the ball to go.

Switch It Up

Some golfers use the driving range just to whack a bunch of balls as hard and as far as possible with the same driver, but this certainly limits your practice goals. Improve your game by using the driving range to learn the scope of each club. Pick different targets on the range and hit several shots with various clubs. Focus on aim, alignment, rhythm, and making solid contact with the ball.

Work your way through your clubs, starting with your sand wedge and then pitching wedge. Move up to your mid-irons, then your fairway woods, and finally, your driver. Don’t move onto the next club until you feel you’ve achieved a smooth routine with the previous club and hitting your primary target each time.

Switching up your clubs is a simple drill that helps add structure to your practice routine, which ultimately improves your game. Repetitive practice enables you to develop muscle memory, which is an essential part of mastering every swing.

Work On Your Grip

Because you get to hit lots of balls while practicing on the driving range, it’s a great time to work on your grip. By using different grips over several swings, you start to feel the difference and learn which one works best for you. Keep your arms relaxed while experimenting with varying pressures of grip on your club. Some golfers practice holding the club with their hands apart to identify better what their optimum grip pressure should feel like. Experimenting with grips helps you find the perfect balance between your swing speed and controlling how the club connects with the ball.
