0 24

Looking to lower your golf score? If so, then you should seriously consider working on improving your approach golf shots. Why? – Because according to experts, a better approach shot is the most effective way to lower your overall score.

Approach golf shots impact scores more than any other shot, including drives, short-game shots, and putting. But what exactly is an approach shot and how can you improve it? Read on to find out more and how can significantly reduce your score by improving your approach.

Approach Golf Shots

Of all the shots made in the game of golf, the approach shot is the broadest. That’s because it comprised any shot that is made 100 yards or more from the hole. An approach shot is considered any shot that that a player intends to hit the green. On a par 4 or 5 course, the third or fourth shot is typically considered an approach shot. On par 3 courses, the tee shot is considered an approach shot.

So, how does improving your approach shot improve your score? The better the shot, the more likely you’ll land your ball on the green, which means you’ll take fewer strokes. Fewer strokes = a better score.

How to Improve Your Approach Golf Shot?

So, how do you go about improving your approach shot? Here’s a look at some helpful tips that can seriously help.

  • Aim at a point on the fairway. To do this, you’ll first need to figure out how far you hit the ball from the tee with your driver on a regular basis. After you determine what your standard range is, select a spot on the fairway and try to reach it when you make your tee shot.
  • Use the right club. The type of club you use can make all the difference in the world when you’re trying to hit the fairway. If you’re using the right club, you’ll have a better chance of reaching your target, even if your swing is less-than perfect.
  • Accuracy is key. Obviously, you want to avoid overshooting; however, you don’t want to be too cautious. When you’re trying to hit the green, accuracy – not distance – is key. The more aligned your approach shot is, the more likely it is that you’ll reach the fairway.
  • Consider the angle. You’ll also want to figure out the angle, as the direction that you are taking the approach shot from is crucial to actually getting the ball in the hole. Assess the lay of the land so that you’re aware of any twists, slopes, or hazards that might be in your way that could affect the position of the ball when it lands. With the lay of the land in mind, figure out what angle you should take when you’re making your approach shot so you can improve your chances of reaching the fairway.
  • Practice makes perfect. The more you practice, the more you’ll improve your approach shot. Get on the course as often as possible and employ the above-mentioned tips every time you do; eventually, you should see an improvement in your approach shot.
