Best Approach for Penalty Areas
Written by Mike Turner, VP Business Development at GolfNorth Properties
Being a Golf Professional and member of the PGA of Canada I tend to get a lot of questions regarding the rules of golf. It’s amazing how many scenarios can arise with a game that basically has a stick, a ball, a hole and a few obstacles in between. Over the season I am going to try and simplify the rules process for you (and myself) especially with some of the changes added for the 2019 season.
Today’s questions…
Q: I have hit it in a Yellow staked penalty area. What are my options?
A: There are 3 options when you hit it into a yellow stake area:
- Play the ball as it lies – no penalty
- Replay the ball from where it was last hit – 1 stroke penalty
- Keeping the point of entry in line with the hole and go back as far as you want – 1 stroke penalty
Q: I have hit it in a Red staked penalty area. What are my options?
A: There are 4 options when you hit it into a red stake area:
- Play the ball as it lies – no penalty
- Replay the ball from where it was last hit – 1 stroke penalty
- Keeping the point of entry in line with the hole and go back as far as you want – 1 stroke penalty
- Drop the ball within 2 club lengths of where the ball crossed the penalty area, no closer to the hole – 1 stroke penalty
As you can see, Yellow and Red Penalty areas are very similar with the one extra and most common option #4 in the Red penalty area. Hopefully these options can help you make the best choice for your current situation and also help with your knowledge of the game.
