[Golf] Golf Concludes 2018 Campaign With NAIA Direct Qualifier
The Montreat Cavaliers' men's and women's golf teams concluded their respective 2018 spring campaigns with appearances at the NAIA Direct Qualifers. The women's event was held at Tega Cay Golf Club in Fort Mill, South Carolina, while the men's was at Carolina Country Club, in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
Each conference in the NAIA holds a year-end qualifier and from each a winning team and individual advances directly to the NAIA National Championships. This year's championships take place on May 15-18 at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois.
For the Montreat women, they finished tied for eighth (with Point) in their qualifier, with Sara Gwillim (JR/Bethalto, IL) leading the way with a final round of 38 over nine holes to finish ninth overall in the field. The event was cut short to 27 holes due to inclement weather. Jamie Hubbard (FR/Hardeeville, SC) was next in for the Cavs and finished tied for 26th.
The Cavs as a team finished ahead of Reinhardt, Union, and Columbia.
"Conditions were extremely tough this week but the ladies battled it out finished strong. It's been a tough spring overall with the weather we've had to deal with, but I am pleased with what we accomplished this season and look forward to the fall," said Montreat head coach John Sullivan.
Gwillim earned a spot on the AAC All-Academic team, along with Kayla Schlichting and Alivia Daniels. Gwillim also earned a place in the Cavalier Court of Excellence for an outstanding 3.89 GPA to accompany her game on the links.
The Cavaliers' men's team finished 10th overall, just five strokes off the pace of Bluefield over three rounds while topping Union by 47 strokes.
Away from the course, Duncan Moody captured an AAC Champions of Character accolade, while Nate Lowe and Moody earned spots on the AAC's All-Academic team.
