Details of Lucas Torreira’s loan move to Atletico Madrid

0 5

Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira has completed a season-long loan move to Atletico Madrid, but there is no obligation to buy in the deal.

Atletico were heavily linked with the Uruguay midfielder, and they finally got the deal done as Thomas Partey moved to Arsenal.

Both deals were independent with the 24-year-old signing on loan for the LaLiga side until the end of the season.

The Gunners were in favour of a permanent deal, but Atletico were not keen on that deal.

Atletico will pay a loan fee, and cover his wages for the season, and there is understood to be an option to make the deal permanent next summer for around €20m.

Although as Football.London note there is no obligation to buy, just an option.

Arsenal’s statement read: “Everyone at Arsenal wishes Lucas well during his time with Atletico Madrid this season.”

Working with Argentinian coach Diego Simeone was a big draw for Torreira, who impressed initially after arriving at Arsenal.

However, the arrival of Dani Ceballos pushed Torreira down the pecking order and he began to talk about leaving the club.

Torreira wanted out

In August he said: “I have to think thoroughly about my future. I have a contract with Arsenal and I have to respect it,” Torreira told Sport 890 in Uruguay.

“Obviously, if I were to leave, I would do it for the best possible destination. We have to be calm and wait.

“Last season I played continuously, this one less so.

“This year has been more complicated: I have lost continuity and confidence. I do not like this. At this age I need to play to be called up for the national team.

“Transfer rumours? I don’t know anything right now. I need to rest because it was a very long season, I got injured, then there was the coronavirus.

“I have a contract with Arsenal, but if I have to change in the future it will be a decision I make for my own good.

Torreira joined Arsenal in the summer of 2018 from Sampdoria for a fee of £27m and made 89 appearances, scoring four goals.

He will now join up with Oscar Tabarez’s Uruguay squad for their CONCAF double header against Chile and Ecuador.
