Joao Gomes to Man United: Strengths, weaknesses & honest transfer verdict
Manchester United are looking to sign at least two new midfielders this summer.
We have already analysed what transfer targets Carlos Baleba, Sandro Tonali, Adam Wharton and James Garner could bring to the table.
As part of our “Strengths, Weaknesses and Honest Transfer Verdict” series, we now move on to another popular name who is heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford.
Joao Gomes has been in decent form this season but it may not be enough to rescue Wolverhampton Wanderers from looming relegation.
Strengths
The 25-year-old is a workhorse who can maintain a high-intensity press for the full 90 minutes.
Winning the ball off him is no easy task, with Gomes embodying a combative, never-say-die mentality similar to Matheus Cunha.
The DataMB graph highlights his efficiency as a ball-winning holding midfielder.
His aggressive approach allows him to dominate duels while also driving forward with the ball from deep positions.
Weaknesses
While United are searching for a dominant holding midfielder to replace Casemiro, they also need someone capable of dictating play and creating from deeper areas.
Although Gomes progresses the ball forward regularly, his passes rarely carry the incision needed to break down stubborn defences.
To truly thrive at Old Trafford, the Brazilian must significantly refine his composure and decision-making in possession.
Another concern lies in a potential midfield partnership with Kobbie Mainoo.
At around 5ft 9in, Gomes could be physically targeted in aerial situations, potentially forcing United’s defenders to step out and cover.
Honest transfer verdict
Despite being under contract until 2030, Wolves may have little choice but to cash in on Gomes if relegation becomes a reality.
While survival remains mathematically possible, it would require nothing short of a historic late-season escape with just seven games remaining.
Gomes could plug the defensive gap left by Casemiro, but he would not represent a transformative upgrade.
At best, he profiles as a useful squad option rather than a midfield cornerstone.
If United are serious about taking the next major step, their focus must shift toward higher-impact targets capable of elevating the team.
