Manchester U21s claimed a 2-1 win over rivals Leeds United in the Premier League 2 on Friday.

United took a two-goal lead in the first half before Leeds pulled one back in the second half, but the Young Reds stood firm to secure the maximum points.

The game’s first chance came in the 20th minute when Jack Fletcher’s deflected cross drifted wide.

Four minutes later, the midfielder put United ahead. He collected a pass from Shea Lacey before sending a cross into the area, which evaded everyone and landed in the net.

Chido Obi came close to doubling the lead after being sent through on goal, but was denied by Leeds goalkeeper Alex Cairns.

Sonny Aljofree then squandered a golden chance, after Tyler Fletcher picked him up inside the area, but the defender could not hit the target.

Just before the break, United made it 2-0 as Shea Lacey and Jack Moorhouse combined to set up Jack Fletcher, who applied the finish.

The hosts nearly pulled one back shortly after the restart when Tyler Fletcher was caught in possession. The ball fell to Harvey Vincent, who could only rattle the post.

Louie Philpott scored a consolation goal for Leeds in the 68th minute, firing a brilliant strike off the post from a difficult angle.

United have now moved level on points with leaders Chelsea, having collected 43 points from 19 games.

Adam Lawrence’s side are back in action on Tuesday, facing Real Madrid in the Premier League International Cup quarter-final.
