English goalscoring records: Haaland & Kane on course to set new landmarks

Changes in the way teams set up tactically have resulted in prolific goalscorers becoming increasingly rare in the modern football landscape.

This is undoubtedly the case in English football, where ‘false-nines’ and ‘wide forwards’ now appear to be all the range at all levels.

Thankfully, there are still some players whose primary function is to stick the ball in the back of the net.

Read on as we look at some of the goalscoring records they could set over the next few years.

Shearer’s Premier League record is under threat

  • Alan Shearer – 260
  • Harry Kane – 213
  • Wayne Rooney – 208
  • Mohamed Salah – 191
  • Andrew Cole – 187
  • Sergio Ageuro – 184
  • Frank Lampard – 177
  • Thierry Henry – 175
  • Robbie Fowler – 163
  • Jermain Defoe – 162

Alan Shearer’s goalscoring exploits helped Blackburn Rovers win the 1994/95 Premier League title. He’s have won even more trophies if he had signed for Manchester United.

However, the allure of returning to boyhood club Newcastle United proved impossible to resist. He achieved legendary status with the Magpies, despite the lack of silverware.

Shearer ended his career with 260 Premier League goals on his CV. Many people thought his tally would never be beaten.

However, Manchester City striker Erling Braut Haaland has scored 107 goals in 126 league games. If he stays in England, Shearer’s record will be under threat. The football betting guides & casino news at Betmaster UK blog have pegged Haaland as the most likely candidate to overtake Shearer, but it’s a tall order and requires him to stay for at least another 8 years.

At 25, the Norwegian has time on his side and an insatiable thirst for goals. Setting a new record would cement his status as a Premier League great. Manchester City would need to keep him though for the entirety of his career.

Intriguingly, Bayern Munich star Harry Kane could throw a spanner in the works if he decides that he still has unfinished business in England.

The England captain previously scored 213 goals in 320 top flight appearances. A couple of seasons in the Premier League could be enough to overhaul Shearer’s record.

Haaland on course to blast past Aguero

  • Sergio Aguero – 260
  • Erling Braut Haaland – 154
  • Joe Hayes – 147
  • Eric Brook – 145
  • Colin Bell – 140
  • Francis Lee – 138
  • Raheem Sterling – 131
  • Fred Tilson – 116
  • Phil Foden – 110
  • Kevin De Bruyne – 108

Sergio Aguero established himself as a Man City legend after scoring 260 goals in 390 appearances and helping the club win a ton of silverware.

However, the Argentinian’s record for City is under threat, with Haaland now on 154 goals in just 189 appearances for the club.

Haaland could feasibly surpass Aguero’s record in around four years, and may ultimately set a new total which would probably never be beaten.

The Norwegian also has Aguero’s tally of 184 Premier League goals in his sights. That record could fall in approximately three seasons.

Haaland seems well settled in Manchester, and the prospect of him seeking a move elsewhere looks relatively remote.

Real Madrid now have Kylian Mbappe in their ranks, so are not in a position to move for Haaland for the foreseeable future.

Barcelona cannot afford Haaland, which further limits the chances of him leaving the Etihad Stadium over the next few years.

If he remains in the Premier League, Haaland is destined to set a string of impressive goalscoring records.

Kane aiming to hit a century for England

  • Harry Kane – 78
  • Wayne Rooney – 53
  • Sir Bobby Charlton – 49
  • Gary Lineker – 48
  • Jimmy Greaves – 44
  • Michael Owen – 40
  • Vivian Woodward – 38
  • Nat Lofthouse – 30
  • Alan Shearer – 30
  • Sir Tom Finney – 30

Kane has already established himself as England’s all-time goalscorer, but still has several other records he can set over the next few years.

His tally of 78 goals in 112 international appearances places him well clear of Wayne Rooney in the all-time standings.

Kane could feasibly break through the 100-goal barrier, particularly if England are handed easy qualification groups for major tournaments.

The Bayern striker will also have his sights set on scoring the most goals in a single World Cup tournament for England this summer.

Kane scored six goals at the 2018 World Cup, equalling the tally set by Gary Lineker in the 1986 edition of the tournament.

England have been paired with Croatia, Ghana and Panama in the group stage. If the Three Lions reach the knockout phase, they have an extra round to negotiate.

That not only boosts Kane’s chances of setting a new mark, but also increases his hopes of winning the Golden Boot for the second time.
