Tottenham highlight £25m Cristian Romero replacement but Atletico Madrid want him too
Tottenham Hotspur are rumoured to be interested in a defender who they were considering last summer as a replacement for Cristian Romero.
It is difficult to say how many Tottenham Hotspur players are heading for a summer exit, but at least some key players departing seems highly likely.
Spurs have had a dreadful season, in which the Champions League has been the club’s one and only positive. However, this is no longer the case after a disastrous result against Atletico Madrid.
This had led to questions over the future of multiple first-team starters, including centre-back duo Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven.
As a result, Tottenham may need to look at adding some new defenders, and they already appear to have identified one transfer target.
Tottenham are interested in signing Mario Gila
According to Tutto Sport (as relayed by Sport Witness), Mario Gila does not want to renew his contract at Lazio, and Spurs have ‘burst onto the scene’ to secure his signature.
Due to the Serie A club’s financial position, Gila should be available for under £25m, but there is competition among a few Premier League clubs.
This includes Aston Villa and Everton, while Atletico Madrid are also in the race, but Diego Simeone’s team are keen not to be involved in a bidding war.
Spurs were linked with Gila last summer
Tottenham already have previous links with Gila, as he was seen as a potential replacement for Romero when it looked like the then-vice captain would join Atletico.
Therefore, it makes sense that Spurs are once again looking at the 28-year-old, with Romero’s Tottenham future uncertain yet again.
With Gila known for his recovery pace, he might be the ideal replacement not for Romero, but for van de Ven, who could also leave North London.
Whatever the case, Tottenham must ensure they get ahead of the competition, because it does not look like Gila will be on sale for long once the transfer window reopens.
