Djed Spence may have just sent a strong message to Igor Tudor with touchline gesture

0 17

Djed Spence did something very revealing after coming off in the second-half during Tottenham’s 5-2 loss to Atletico Madrid.

Spurs had essentially been all but knocked out of the Champions League in the first 22 minutes, with Atletico sailing to a 4-0 lead.

All of the home side’s first three goals came via catastrophic individual errors at the back for Spurs, two of them by Antonin Kinsky, who had been controversially drafted into the eleven in place of Guglielmo Vicario.

Kinsky had to go through the humiliation of being taken off in just 17 minutes, with the Czech goalkeeper in tears as he walked off the pitch.

Djed Spence’s telling gesture during Tottenham’s loss to Atletico Madrid

The interim Spurs head coach did not acknowledge Kinsky or any of the other Tottenham players when they came off at the Metropolitano Stadium.

When Djed Spence was taken off with 10 minutes left on the clock, the full-back decided to take it upon himself to get Tudor’s attention.

The 25-year-old sat down on the bench, then got up again soon after and approached Tudor on the touchline. Spence then tapped him on the shoulder to offer a handshake.

The England international may have been sending a message to Tudor, whose time at Tottenham is in danger of being cut short.

Broadcaster suggests Spence showed solidarity with Antonin Kinsky

Commentator Darren Fletcher said on TNT Sports that Spence’s action painted a picture of what is a fractured club within.

He suggested that the former Middlesbrough man’s gesture may have been motivated by Tudor failing to acknowledge Kinsky when he took the goalkeeper off.

Fletcher claims Spence could have made a deliberate point to the interim Spurs head coach in solidarity with his 22-year-old teammate, but this is all just guess work.
