Sports briefs: Two all-Marin quarterfinals set for girls soccer

The girls soccer teams from The Branson School, San Rafael High, Marin Catholic, and Archie Williams all won their first round North Coast Section playoff games on Tuesday, setting up a pair of all-Marin quarterfinals on Friday.

No. 1 Branson is set to host No. 9 San Rafael in the Division II tournament at 3:30 p.m. on Friday while No. 1 Marin Catholic hosts No. 8 Archie Williams in the D-III quarterfinals.

San Rafael (13-2-9) got an Olympico from Brooklyn Cox as she scored directly off a corner kick for the winning goal in a 3-2 victory on the road against No. 8 Head-Royce (11-5-0). Jaela Brown scored the first goal and Yasmin Lopez scored the second as the Bulldogs went into halftime tied 2-2.

Branson needed second-half goals from Sophie Arnal and Cat Howell to pull away from a 3-0 victory against No. 16 Newark Memorial (14-5-0). Kara Kandakulam scored the first goal for the Bulls (21-1-2) following an assist from Howell. Julia Myerberg assisted on Arnal’s goal in the 55th minute for a 2-0 lead.

Marin Catholic (6-7-5) rolled to a 6-0 victory against No. 16 American (8-12-0) getting a pair of goals and an assist from Nora Snearly. Claire Hunnewell, Brooklyn Blackman, Ava Korich, and Katie McConneloug also scored for MC. Siena White, Ellie Walker, and Lana Wihlborg added assists.

Archie Williams (8-9-2) prevailed against No. 9 Freedom (10-7-3) on penalties after a 1-1 tie through regulation and both overtimes. The Peregrine Falcons advanced 4-1 in the shootout.

• Reese Goodenough netted a hat trick and assisted on another goal as No. 2 Marin Academy rolled to a 6-0 victory in the D-II playoffs. Lily Weaver added a goal and an assist for MA (15-2-2). Tatum Colpitts and Reese Hanna also scored. Blythe DeGooyer had an assist for MA, which hosts a quarterfinal on Friday against the late winner between No. 7 Heritage and No. 10 Vintage.

Boys soccer

Redwood advanced to the NCS D-III quarterfinals with a 1-0 win after No. 13 Freedom (8-9-4) scored an own goal in overtime. The No. 4 Giants (7-6-4) await the winner of the late game between No. 5 Acalanes and No. 12 Deer Valley.

• No. 4 Terra Linda (10-6-4) saw its season come to an end following a 1-0 home loss to No. 13 Foothill (8-6-3) in the NCS D-II playoffs on Tuesday.

Women’s tennis

Dominican University’s Kaylee Lopez and Ana Rios won in tiebreakers, and Maria Gavrilov added a singles win, but the Penguins (2-1) fell short 4-3  against Hawaii Pacific in Honolulu on Monday. Rios held tough in a marathon No. 6 singles 7-5, 3-6, 14-12 victory in the last match off the court. Lopez won 7-6 (9-7), 4-6, 11-9 at No. 4 singles.

Youth sports

San Domenico boys basketball coach Tyler Gaffaney is launching “Bring Back Play”, a grass-roots push to keep pickup games and unstructured play a part of children’s lives. Gaffaney aims to launch Free Play Fridays in San Anselmo and Free Play Sundays in Novato in the Spring, hoping to offer unstructured activities for children in grades 4-8. Children who sign up at www.bringbackplay.org arrive for a 3-hour session of free play where they “run the show.”
